Mason Mill Three Creeks Trail Segment Distances

While on a run last week, I measured the various segments that make up the Mason Mill Three Creeks Trail. These are the results.

I expect to be running the Mason Mill trails a bit more frequently during this cross country training cycle, so I thought it would be good to have an understanding of the different trail segments in the system. The Mason Mill trails have several official trails, but a lot of unmarked stuff as well. When I first ran/hiked/walked these trails years ago, I don’t think any of them were official or marked, but now there are signs and blazes for the main ones.

A map of the trails is available linked from the Friends of Melton Park webpage.

I ran the Three Creeks Trail last week and measured its various segments using laps on my GPS watch.

The Three Creeks Trail consists of a loop in Ira B. Melton Park, a creek crossing and connector to a trailhead on the South Peachtree Creek PATH, and a loop on the other side of the PATH. The map says the whole thing is 0.85 miles. My measurements indicated ~0.78mi.

A screenshot of just the Three Creeks Trail of the Mason Mill Trails map. Distance annotations have been added. They are described in the following table.

My measurements for my annotated section of the map:

Segment Distance (mi)
Ira B. Melton Trailhead-Creek Crossing WEST 0.22
Creek Crossing 0.01
Creek Crossing-PATH Trailhead 0.09
PATH-side Loop 0.15
Ira B. Melton Trailhead-Creek Crossing EAST 0.22

A full loop of the Three Creeks Trail would be one Ira B. Melton Trailhead-Creek Crossing WEST segment, two Creek Crossings, two Creek Crossing-PATH Trailhead segments, one PATH-side Loop, and one Ira B. Melton Trailhead-Creek Crossing EAST segment.

My measurements indicate the Ira B. Melton loop to total 0.44 miles. Additionally, Ira B. Melton has an unmarked loop starting and ending from the EAST side of the loop. I measured that loop at 0.06 miles, with the southern junction 0.08 from the Ira B. Melton trailhead, the northern junction 0.1 mile from the creek crossing, and 0.03 miles between them.
