Some lessons learned for the next time I remove nandina domestica.
Cleared out our nandina domestica today. It didn’t look like much, but it was apparent that someone had previously cut these back so the root systems were much larger than the foliage volume would indicate.
I filled 2 construction garbage bags but split it among four bags because it was so heavy.
I found a native fern among logs set out for collection at a neighbor’s house, so I brought it home in hopes it will establish itself in a shady part of our landscape.

This is the time of year when the fruits of the exotic Nandina domestica shrub are particularly noticeable and reminders go out from conservation groups to remove the fruits (and even the shrubs) to protect birds.
I think I have a few of these growing in yet-to-be-tackled parts of our yard. Looks like I should go ahead and remove them ahead of schedule.
